INTCATCH 2020 HM boat demonstration in Asopos river

11 October 2019, Oropos, Greece

A demonstration of INTCATCH HM boat took place on the 11th of October 2019 in Asopos river (Oropos, Greece). The presentation, was organized by EYDAP and NTUA in collaboration with Laboratory of Environmental Chemistry of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens (LEC-NKUA) and the responsible authorities (Prefecture of Attika, Municipality). Along the Asopos river human activities, mainly agriculture and industrial take place. Industrial and agricultural effluents pollute the river, the aquifers and the soils of the area, making it a suitable example of the impacts to humans and environment that arise from non-sustainable use of natural resources.

The campaign that took place focused on the operation of Heavy Metal and sampling system and the demonstration of its capabilities in real environment. The HM system tested successfully by LEC-NKUA scientific personnel and four water samples collected with the sampling system from river’s estuaries on behalf of LEC-NKUA. It was concluded that INTCATCH autonomous boats can contribute to more complete and sufficient control of a river’s quality, identifying potential contamination from anthropogenic activities or even physical processes.
