INTCATCH boat deployment in Kifissos river estuaries

16 July 2020, Athens, Greece

A “deployment on demand” of INTCATCH boat took place on the 16th of July 2020 in Kifissos river, the main river of Attica region (Athens, Greece). The campaign, was organized by Athens Water Supply and Sewerage Company (EYDAP S.A.) and the Institute of Marine Biological Resources and Inland Waters (IMBRIW) of the Hellenic Centre for Marine Research (HCMR).

The source of the river is in the saddle between the Parnitha and Penteli mountains, and it flows generally southwest, near or under the highway 1 linking Athens and Thessaloniki for the majority of its length until it reaches the Phaleron Bay in Saronic Gulf. During the campaign, the INTCATCH boat covered almost 2 km under the highway, reaching the mixing zone of the river with the sea, identifying interesting profiles of the physicochemical parameters that were monitored.

Kifissos river is during the last decades under great concern to Public Authorities (‘Special Secretariat for Water’ under Ministry of Environment and Energy, Prefecture of Attica, Municipalities), Kifissos River Basin Management Body (https://www.enm.gr/kifissos-river-basin-management), Academic Community (NTUA, NKUA, Agricultural University of Athens), Research Centers (Institute of Marine Biological Resources and Inland Waters, NCSR Demokritos) and NGOs. Therefore, EYDAP SA’s goal is, to apply INTCATCH tools and contribute to a better control of the river's quality.
