UGOE - Founded in 1737, the Georg-August-Universitaet Goettingen Stiftung Oeffentlichen Rechts is a research university of international renown with strong focuses in research-led teaching. The name of Goettingen is associated with 46 Nobel Prize winners who have lived and worked here. The University is distinguished by the rich diversity of its subject spectrum, particularly in the humanities, and its excellent facilities for the pursuit of scientific research. In 2003, the Georg-August-Universität Goettingen became the first German university with a comprehensive range of disciplines to assume the legal status of a foundation under public law. The University has since then enhanced its research profile, created new research entities such as the Courant Research Centres and the Lichtenberg-Kolleg, intensified cooperation on the Goettingen Research Campus, attracted and retained outstanding academics and supported the recruitment of excellent students and young academics from abroad. The University is founding member of the Coimbra Group and the U4 Network and is running active agreements with institutions of higher education in ninety countries.
From 2007 to 2012 the Georg-August-Universitaet Goettingen was rewarded funding from the Initiative of Excellence of the German Federal and State Governments with its institutional strategy for the future entitled “Goettingen. Tradition – Innovation – Autonomy”. The University was able to realize all measures of the concept. Today about 29,200 students (approx. 12 % from abroad) are inscribed in 13 faculties. Teaching encompasses 193 programmes of study (i.e. 86 Bachelor / 75 Master / 20 PhD and other). Goettingen has a long history of successful bidding for European funding and of successful managing and delivery of EU projects. It was partner on 91 projects within FP7 (25 of those with coordination) with cumulative value of around 36 Mio Euro. Within Horizon 2020, five funded projects (three of those with coordination, incl. 2ERC) have been started since 2014 and four proposals are in the grant preparation.
The UGOE is an internationally renowned university placing emphasis on research and research-based teaching. The University is distinguished by the outstanding quality in its priority research areas, by its remarkable diversity of disciplines, especially in the humanities, and by a strong and deeply anchored interdisciplinarity in the natural and life sciences. Currently, Goettingen has strong international collaborations including 760 cooperations with 821 institutions in 114 countries. Goettingen is active in Coimbra Group, which is a network of European Universities including 38 partners from 21 countries. Further, Goettingen is member of U4 network cooperating with the Universities of Uppsala (Sweden), Ghent (Belgium) and Groningen (Netherlands).
